CFE welcomes Sean Giesbrecht as a member of its working group promoting intellectual freedom in schools

The Centre for Free Expression (CFE) at Toronto Metropolitan University announced today that Sean Giesbrecht is joining its Working Group on Schools and Intellectual Freedom. The Working Group guides CFE’s initiatives in promoting and defending intellectual freedom for school libraries and curriculum materials and in resisting demands for censorship.

“Sean Giesbrecht brings a wealth of experience that will be invaluable to CFE”, said CFE Director James L. Turk. “We are delighted he is joining our working group.”

A teacher-librarian and English teacher at École secondaire Oak Park High School in Winnipeg’s Pembina Trails School Division, Sean is Department Head of English and a Program Leader. He is a former Member-at-Large of the Manitoba Teachers' Society Provincial Executive and a passionate advocate for public education, democratic principles, equitable funding for public schools, and intellectual freedom.

“Through his years as an educator, Sean has shown dedication to fostering environments where students can explore diverse viewpoints and challenge themselves to engage with ideas with which they may initially disagree,” said Turk.

The Centre for Free Expression at Toronto Metropolitan University works to ensure that the rights to freedom of expression, informed civic engagement, individual self-development, and social justice are a reality for all through public education, advocacy, law reform, research, advisory services, policy analysis, assistance to courts, and organizational collaborations.
