Anti-SLAPP laws help prevent abuse of the legal system when an individual or organization tries to silence someone by launching an expensive lawsuit (usually defamation) against them. Such lawsuits are termed “SLAPPs” – strategic lawsuits against public participation. Through public education, advocacy, organizing, and policy research, the Centre for Free Expression is working to have all provinces in Canada follow the lead of Ontario, BC, and Quebec in introducing effective anti-SLAPP laws to protect public discourse.
