Sean Giesbrecht
Sean Giesbrecht is a Teacher-Librarian and English teacher at École secondaire Oak Park High School in the Pembina Trails School Division, located on Treaty One Territory in Winnipeg, MB. As Department Head of English and a Program Leader, Sean champions the development of literacy, curiosity, and global competencies, equipping students with the tools they need to succeed in an ever-evolving, complex world.
A former Member-at-Large of the Manitoba Teachers' Society Provincial Executive, Sean is a passionate advocate for public education, democratic principles, and equitable funding for public schools. He believes the necessity to defend and increase access to the tools and mechanisms of intellectual freedom is a fundamental principle of democracy. He underscores that accessing and considering a broad range of perspectives is essential for a thriving society and that censorship undermines compassion, democracy, and society itself.
Sean is dedicated to fostering environments where students can explore diverse viewpoints and challenge themselves to engage with ideas with which they may initially disagree. This commitment stems from a conversation he had with a parent in his first year of teaching: "In our culture, we say that we parents bring our child into the world, and teachers bring the world to our child. Thank you for bringing the world to our son."
