The Centre for Free Expression joins in the world-wide call for an end to the persecution of Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange facing a 175-year prison term in the United States if extradited by Britain. In a letter today to President Joe Biden, sent jointly with Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, CFE called on the American President to drop his government’s pursuit of Mr. Assange.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) has declared its support for the criminalization of the denial of the existence of Indian residential schools in Canada.

In Manitoba, trustees of the Brandon School Division voted to reject a proposal to create a committee to review and ban books that focus on sexual minorities and sexual health.

CFE urged the Commission to act on the testimony of expert panels and witnesses that there is an immense public interest in transparency regarding foreign interference. "The Commission cannot defer to the Government of Canada’s conclusions on what can and cannot be disclosed [but must] be prepared to seek recourse in Federal Court on an expedited basis" in the event the Government attempts to overly restrict public access to essential documents about foreign interference.

In its opening submission, the CFE addresses principles for public confidence, the necessity of on transparency throughout the Inquiry, and the importance of the public’s right to know.

The Centre for Free Expression joins with 15 other national and international organizations in calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the leaders of the opposition parties to pass Bill C-290 which would take important steps to strengthening Canada’s very weak whistleblower protection legislation.
