Faisal Bhabha
Faisal Bhabha is an Associate Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. He has researched and taught in the areas of constitutional law, human rights, legal ethics and access to justice. He has held a variety of visiting appointments around the world, including at Monash University (Australia), Jindal Global Law School (India) and Sherbrooke Law School (Quebec), as well as stints working with NGOs in South Africa and Palestine.
Faisal is also counsel to Pooranlaw, a boutique disability law firm in Toronto, where he provides advice and representation in Charter challenges, human rights claims, wrongful dismissals, administrative appeals, and amicus interventions. He also works in investigations, dispute resolution, and policy development. He has appeared as counsel at the Supreme Court of Canada, and as an expert witness before Canadian parliamentary and senate committees.
From 2008-2011, Faisal served as Vice-Chair with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, where he adjudicated and mediated hundreds of cases. He served as a member of the Equity Advisory Group of the Law Society of Upper Canada from 2003-2006. He chairs the National Security Policy Committee and serves as legal advisor to the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM). In 2012, he was honoured by the South Asian Bar Association (SABA) as ‘Male Lawyer of the Year’. In 2014 he received the Osgoode Hall Law School teaching award.
Faisal Bhabha was the recipient of the Canadian Barr Association's 2023 Touchstone Award, which celebrates the accomplishments of an individual or an organization who has excelled in promoting equality in the legal profession, the judiciary or the legal community in Canada.
