Melanie J. Newton is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and former Director of the Caribbean Studies Program at the University of Toronto. She specializes in the history of the Caribbean and the Atlantic World. She is the author of The Children of Africa in the Colonies: Free People of Color in Barbados in the Age of Emancipation and numerous scholarly articles on gender, slavery and slave emancipation and indigenous Caribbean history.
