Lita Barrie Joins CFE Advisory Board

Lita Barrie, Chair of the Canadian Federation of Library Associations/Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques (CFLA-FCAB) is joining the Centre for Free Expression’s Advisory Board, replacing Andrea Cecchetto, the outgoing CFLA/FCAB Chair.

“As libraries of all types are facing growing demands for censorship of their books, programs, displays and exhibits, and outreach initiatives to the diversity of their communities, CFE’s relationship with CFLA is vital to both organizations,” said James L. Turk, Director of the Centre for Free Expression.

“Lita’s help and advice based on her years of experience locally and nationally will be invaluable in our work to defend and promote intellectual freedom and informed public discourse.”

Lita has served as CEO of Burlington Public Library for the past eight years. She plays an active leadership role at both provincial and national levels, currently serving not only as Chair of CFLA-FCAB, but also as President of the Ontario Library Association, and Program Coordinator for the Canadian Urban Libraries Council Public Library Leaders Program.

She holds a Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from McGill University and is committed to continuous learning and professional advancement.

The Centre for Free Expression at Toronto Metropolitan University works to ensure that the rights to freedom of expression, informed civic engagement, individual self-development, and social justice are a reality for all through public education, advocacy, law reform, research, advisory services, policy analysis, assistance to courts, and organizational collaborations.
