Franklin Carter

Franklin Carter is a member of the Book and Periodical Council’s Freedom of Expression Committee in Toronto, Canada. He has been on the committee since 1996.

The Book and Periodical Council (BPC) promotes the publication, sale and reading of Canadian books and magazines. Its Freedom of Expression Committee promotes the freedom to read and opposes censorship. The committee also organizes Canada’s Freedom to Read Week.

Franklin co-edits Freedom to Read, the BPC’s annual magazine, and emails news about free expression in Canada to the BPC’s friends and supporters. He also answers questions when journalists, students and others contact the BPC.

In 2019, he became the BPC’s Champion of Free Expression. In 2010, the Ontario Library Association bestowed its Les Fowlie Intellectual Freedom Award on the BPC’s Freedom of Expression Committee.

Franklin is a career editor of non-fiction books, magazines and reports. He founded Franklin Carter Editorial Services in 1996.

He is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where he studied European history, and a graduate of Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, where he studied journalism.
