Join us for an evening of film and discussion about the controversial case of Omar Khadr, the teenager from Toronto who allegedly killed an American soldier in Afghanistan in 2002. Khadr is the only juvenile ever to be tried for war crimes. He has spent half his life behind bars, including a decade at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay where he was tortured before pleading guilty to murder. He was returned to Canada in 2012.

The film

Guantanamo’s Child: Omar Khadr, premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. The film features unprecedented access and exclusive interviews with Khadr during his first few days of freedom. Finally, his story, in his own words.

The discussion

Award-winning Toronto Star reporter Michelle Shephard is the film’s co-director and wrote the book, Guantanamo’s Child: The Untold Story of Omar Khadr, on which the film is based. She will discuss Omar Khadr and the larger issues his case raises about justice, rights, freedom and fear in our world today. Bernie Lucht, former executive producer of CBC Radio’s Ideas, will moderate.
