CFE Virtual Forum Series:
Over the past two decades, we have witnessed the economic devastation of institutional journalism that creates new content through original reporting and research. It is being increasingly replaced by citizen journalism consisting mainly of commentary on information available to everyone and by social media platforms that absorb most of the advertising revenue while creating no content. COVID-19 has only made matters worse, hastening the further demise of institutional media. Like the advertiser-supported model from its inception, every possible solution potentially can compromise editorial independence – reader supported online journalism, patron-foundation supported journalism, direct government support. Join our panel for a lively discussion of what, if anything, can and should be done.
