Ryder Gilliland Joins CFE Board
Ryder Gilliland, Founding Partner of DMG Advocates LLP and Past President of the Canadian Media Lawyers Association (CMLA), is joining the Centre for Free Expression Advisory Board.
One of the leading media and defamation lawyers in Canada, Gilliland has been advising community and metropolitan newspapers, digital publishers, book publishers and broadcasters on issues relating to defamation law, publication bans, sealing orders, privacy and copyright for more than 15 years. He has appeared at every level of court in Ontario, as well as the Court of Queen’s Bench in New Brunswick, the Federal Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Tax Court of Canada, and the Supreme Court of Canada. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Ryerson where he has taught media law to journalism students for a decade.
“We are delighted that Ryder will be joining our board. His exceptional experience will be a valuable contribution to our board and to the work of the Centre,” said James L. Turk, Director of the Centre for Free Expression.
Turk also expressed appreciation for Brian Rogers, the founding president of the CMLA and a founding member of the CFE Board, who is retiring. “Brian provided the inspiration and model for the Centre’s “big tent” approach to dealing with matters of expressive freedom and the public’s right to know” said Turk. “We are deeply in his debt and appreciative of his contributions to our work from the outset.”
